When I installed fvwm and then chose it (via editing .xinitrc) as my
window manager, it didn't work. It turned out that it was complaining
(and then, apparently, silently refusing to exit) about missing
configuration files, like so:

IMHO the fvwm package should ship with a standard configuration file
in a place that the binary can find it. I understand that there are
upgrade issues from older versions of fvwm with existing configuration
files. I also did find the example in
/use/share/doc/fvwm/sample.fvwmrc/system.fvwm2rc.gz, copy it to my
homedir, gunzip it, rename it, and rerun fvwm, at which point it
worked, but that seems like an unnecessary hassle (especially after
having to take some time to figure out why it was refusing to do
anything useful in the first place).
