That really doesn't make sense, because the code handling this is basically the same between 3.0 and 3.5, and it works for me, with: /usr/lib/iceweasel/firefox-bin -a iceweasel -remote "openurl(http://www.debian.org,new-tab)" which is basically what end up being run in your log.
