Package: bind9 Version: 1:9.6.1.dfsg.P2-1 Severity: normal For several months I've been having BIND's ‘named’ process hang intermittently.
I'm running Debian Squeeze, with the ‘bind9’ package version currently at 1:9.6.1.dfsg.P2-1 though the same behaviour has persisted for a number of versions. When the server hangs, it becomes completely unresponsive from that point on. Queries time out, the ‘rndc’ program is no longer able to communicate with it, and sending the ‘TERM’ signal to the ‘named’ process doesn't do anything. The only way I've found to restore service is to ‘sudo killall -KILL named’ and restart the server, which of course doesn't give much opportunity to find out what's wrong. I have been trying to narrow down what might be a proximate cause for the bug; but so far all I know is that it is more likely to occur when there is a lot of network traffic. There are no log unusual log messages from the server when the process runs into trouble. What can I do to further diagnose this failure on this machine? -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (900, 'stable') Architecture: powerpc (ppc64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.30-2-powerpc64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_AU.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_AU.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) (ignored: LC_ALL set to en_AU.UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages bind9 depends on: ii adduser 3.111 add and remove users and groups ii bind9utils 1:9.6.1.dfsg.P2-1 Utilities for BIND ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.28 Debian configuration management sy ii libbind9-50 1:9.6.1.dfsg.P2-1 BIND9 Shared Library used by BIND ii libc6 2.10.2-2 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcap2 1:2.17-2 support for getting/setting POSIX. ii libdb4.8 4.8.24-1 Berkeley v4.8 Database Libraries [ ii libdns53 1:9.6.1.dfsg.P2-1 DNS Shared Library used by BIND ii libgssapi-krb5-2 1.7+dfsg-3 MIT Kerberos runtime libraries - k ii libisc50 1:9.6.1.dfsg.P2-1 ISC Shared Library used by BIND ii libisccc50 1:9.6.1.dfsg.P2-1 Command Channel Library used by BI ii libisccfg50 1:9.6.1.dfsg.P2-1 Config File Handling Library used ii libldap-2.4-2 2.4.17-2.1 OpenLDAP libraries ii liblwres50 1:9.6.1.dfsg.P2-1 Lightweight Resolver Library used ii libssl0.9.8 0.9.8k-7 SSL shared libraries ii libxml2 2.7.6.dfsg-1 GNOME XML library ii lsb-base 3.2-23 Linux Standard Base 3.2 init scrip ii net-tools 1.60-23 The NET-3 networking toolkit ii netbase 4.37 Basic TCP/IP networking system bind9 recommends no packages.
