Might it at least be worth documenting this somewhat bizarre behaviour? users might reasonably be running a shell script with set -e or similar, and be suprised if they make an error and the script doesn't exit.

In general, I'm not sure this sort of behaviour is actually helpful, but I can see that upstream isn't going to buy that.
