Completely agreed. If you check out the version of schroot in experimental (1.3.2-1), this has support for unionfs/aufs overlays. This support is new and should work just fine, but I would be very grateful for any feedback regarding it--even just to let me know it's working OK! See schroot.conf(5) for the additional union options you need to add to your existing configuration. This should go into unstable and then testing in the next few weeks, since it's believed to be stable and fully functional. The only limitation is that the union overlay under /var/lib/schroot/overlay must not be the same physical filesystem as the underlying mount (bind mounted under /var/lib/schroot/underlay). AFAIK this is due to a limitation in aufs which requires separate filesystems. If you have a separate /var this shouldn't be an issue, but if you have directory chroots on the same filesystem, you might run into issues (this is again something I would like to know more about--I'll put in appropriate diagnostics if you can confirm this is the case).
