I have extracted my backup of the pre-upgrade (Lenny) system and reran
the upgrade steps. I could reproduce the error about
openoffice.org-emailmerge_1%3a3.1.1-8_all.deb. The "apt-get -f
install" appears to have resolved the openoffice problems. There
were other errors later, but they may have to do with the fact that I
had extracted to a nodev file system and forgotten to mount -bind /dev
appropriately (or maybe they came because I had not backed up
/var/cache).

Anyway, you can find the log (created with "xterm -l") of the whole
session on

http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/anton/tmp/Xterm.log.smaug.2010.01.10.13.23.18.28970

The commands I did for the upgrade are:

 2060 #editing /etc/apt/sources.list and .../preferences
 2061 cat /etc/apt/sources.list
 2062 cat /etc/apt/preferences
 2063 apt-get -q install apt dpkg
 2064 apt-get update
 2065 apt-get -q install apt dpkg
 2066 apt-get -q dist-upgrade
 2067 apt-get -q dist-upgrade
 2068 apt-get -q -f install
