Clint,

it's not possible to CNAME zone at it's apex according to current
spec, ie. it's not a bug, but a feature of DNS. For more info, you can
see RFC1034/1035.

You have to put CNAME into the parent zone (which may not be possible
if you don't control the parent zone, ie. usually TLD).
