I can indeed get the statistics line now as well, thanks. Unfortunately,
for me the problem is still not reproducible. So we need to dig into the
difference between your setup and mine.

First, could you start nedit AFTER you temporarily renamed your
~/.nedit/nedit.rc file to something else? If this solves the problem,
could you attach that file to the bug report. If it does not solve the
problem could you for completeness give the output of

dpkg -l nedit lesstif2 libc6 libx11-6 libxt6

Don't forget to rename the file back to nedit.rc after you're done.

How do you start nedit?
How do you switch tabs?

Just to be sure, does the problem exist if you start with
