I was suffering this bug for a long time (6 months). Yesterday I removed
all pulseaudio packages (with the exception of the essential libraries,
libpulse0, etc.) and now kmix seems to work well.

The reason I installed pulseaudio some time ago was my sound card (HDA
Intel) wasn't well supported by 2.6 kernels until recently, and Phonon
failed sometimes complaining that no ALSA souncard was available.

All in all, I got rid of PulseAudio and everything seems to work well now.

Cheers,

mendi
