I dislike the idea of having to maintain this list in yet another place. Your list is not particularly complete either, missing _darcs for example. Of course, most VCS do not replicate subdirectory names inside their dot-dir the way hg does, so are not really affected. Another approach could be to only delete known autom4te files from autom4te.cache (output.? , requests, traces.?) , and empty autom4te.cache directories. -- see shy jo
