I confirm this bug also on my laptop (Intel Core2 Duo T7700 with intel graphic card). It seems to me that the bug is related to KMS as disabling it (passing video=i915:modeset=0 to kernel at boot) makes the system bootable again even with grub version 1.98~20100126-1. Version 1.98~20100115-1 boots ok with KMS on.
