Hi. I just installed kfreebsd-i386 and I have the same problems as the previous reporters. Since emacs is so important, not being able to use it makes the whole system almost unuseable. I'm seeing this with the plain GTK version. I can also confirm that, if I start it with -nw, then it is able to be loaded. I have not yet been able to test if the problems occours if the X session is redirected via the network (e.g., with ssh)---I guess that this is, perhaps, a problem with emacs and the xserver. Just one extra data point: I am right now using GNOME with all bells and whistles, which means that the problem may not exactly be with GTK. I am volunteering to test anything, though.
