Indeed, it crashes here as well. It seems that the error handling code in the publish plugin is not very good (or for some reason broken on Debian). Also, I assume it is trying to launch the PDF file using some program that is not installed on Debian. I need to investigate this some more. Help from the Serna developers is of course appreciated.
