What version of dpkg are you using? It has supported that for
a very long time.

$ dpkg-architecture -L |grep alpha
uclibc-linux-alpha
alpha
kfreebsd-alpha
knetbsd-alpha
kopensolaris-alpha
hurd-alpha
darwin-alpha
freebsd-alpha
netbsd-alpha
openbsd-alpha
solaris-alpha
uclinux-alpha

But those are just all the combinations that dpkg knows, not all
ports we have. The only alpha port we have is "alpha", and it's
probably going to stop existing soon, it's already removed from
testing.
