and why? provide teh contents of at least a couple of files. Anyhow,
i'm inclined to think it's something related to gnus (the tilde): do
you use (or used) it for sending reports?

Very smart (they are there for a reason) so I don't know if something
in your configuration is broken or what settings you have so I can
replicate with the same sets. Please provide all of them and protect
only the private one (like username or pwd for smtp).
