I doubt that as I've been using the exact same version of Virtualbox for 
ages and have never seen this before.

And I can reproduce the issue in qemu without any problem:

AFAICT the change was caused the latest syslinux upload.

I've just confirmed that because when I build the image with 3.83 from 
testing I get a correct boot screen:
