Hi Erik, compiling use with --with-sdl-sound is, unfortunately, still no option; sound simply does not work properly, so using oss or alsa is still better for most users. I agree however that this would be the best solution if it would work ;).
[ There is also a note about that in some ancient changelog entry, however for some reasons not here ;(. ] However, the current version 0.8.29-6 uses --with-alsa, which might solve your problem; also artsd might have been replaced or is smarter (not using /dev/dsp) now. Also, e-uae might work better for you. I am keeping this as wishlist bug for later, however.
