There seems to be patches for this issue: http://code.google.com/p/distcc/issues/detail?id=34#c7 Are they sane/sensbile?
Is this still a problem in Sid/Squeeze? It certainly exists in Lenny still, but if a subsequent release has been packaged this bug could probably be closed or tagged appropriately.
