This is one of the few packages which still build-depends on automake1.7. Version 3.8.3-7.2 (the one which we currently have in Ubuntu) does not call automake at all in debian/rules, and the current one in sid (3.8.3-10) builds just fine against the unversioned "automake" package (1.11).
