utf8 covers (at most) characters represented in latex-standard font
encodings.  anything (like japanese, for example) without such an
encoding, isn't covered.

in your case, i would imagine the problem was just that.

analysis of the code of utf8x leads me to suspect that it's not as
robust as that of utf8; since utf8x is not supported, this could in
principle be a problem.

fwiw, the only european language omitted from utf8, afaik, is greek.

as an (indirect) result, i've never actually used utf8.
