My jubilation may be premature. While some fonts look fine after switching geometries (e.g. the fixed font for the message body of this email, being typed in icedove, and all of the fonts in gnome-terminal) others look like they are still being scaled with the geometry increases, e.g. the icedove, iceweasel and google-chrome menu fonts.

So we still need some expert help to explain why this is so.

Anyway, here's the new xrandr output with my patch after switching to 1024x768, using the vnc.conf geometries specified below:

sy...@lear:~$ xrandr
 SZ:    Pixels          Physical       Refresh
 0    640 x 480    ( 163mm x 122mm )   60
 1    800 x 480    ( 203mm x 122mm )   60
 2    800 x 600    ( 203mm x 152mm )   60
*3   1024 x 768    ( 260mm x 195mm )  *60
Current rotation - normal
Current reflection - none
Rotations possible - normal
Reflections possible - none

$geometry = ["640x480","800x480","800x600","1024x768"];
