I have augmented the configuration on the computer where this glitch was discovered. It is now capable of booting into lenny (5.0.4) and squeeze. These two are installed on different partitions, so each can be modified without affecting the other. Qpopper in the clean new install of lenny works correctly, and qpopper in the squeeze install continues to fail quite reproducibly.
