Installed linux-image-2.6.33-2-686 from experimental. With this kernel things are worse: neither encrypted (WPA) nor unencrypted connections are working via network-manager. Switching back to linux-2.6.32-3-686 + ralink-2.3.0.0 both are immediately working -- so I guess it isn't an infrastructure problem. I could try to build the new ralink drivers for 2.6.33 as well and see if that fixes the problem too, but I'm not sure if that adds useful information.
