It's upstream who started this move and abandoned gsynaptics. As we're
getting close to the stable release, the decision needs to be taken
whether we're willing to support something what upstream has abandoned.
And the decision was that we don't want to. Also gsynaptics was quite
far from being stable and for most people gpds provides better
functionality than gsynaptics.

Yes this is the real cause of the problems - GNOME now includes some
way to configure touchpad, which do conflict with GPDS. gsynaptics is
not affected by this because it uses different way to load the settings
(autostart script vs. settings-daemon plugin). There is ongoing
discussion in upstream bug about this.
