The mentioned bug is fixed in 1:1.9.6~20100401-1, there were a few more related problems found after the last snapshot (countig bytes instead of chars in multibyte env.; truncating strings in the middle of a multibyte sequence) which have been fixed upstream, but the code is not yet released. Anyway, #416690 is fixed in 1:1.9.6~20100401-1.
