forgot to cc bugs.debian.org for the last message above.to show the debian menu under applications just simply right click on applications, then choose edit menu, then select the debian menu, then close the window and then, finally, there is the debian menu under applications which contains the gps entry under programming.
i'm sorry to make you lose your time, and many many thanks for packaging gps.
