No, pdflatex (ps2pdf also takes PDF files as input).

texlive or ghostscript? (ps2pdf comes from ghostscript.)

The problem could also come from the viewers since they seem to
use the same source (that could explain that the error message
is the same).

evince uses libpoppler, and the libpoppler5 description says:

  Poppler is a PDF rendering library based on xpdf PDF viewer.
