Hi,
I think this bug is fixed in the pbzip2 1.1.0-1 package. I thought I'd
try it just now on a system running Debian 'squeeze', using that
shellscript I posted before. It seems to work just fine. On my older
Debian 'lenny' system running pbzip2 1.0.5-1, it would have exhausted
all available memory in under 10 minutes.
On a related note, I don't really use pbzip2 any more... I found that
my backup runs were more power-efficient overall if I just used 'gzip
-3' instead, at the expense of a poor compression ratio. pbzip2 is very
fast, but it puts all CPU cores under load and that was increasing my
server's power consumption quite a bit.
