Also, once this is done, since it was the only significant task left managed by cron we will probably drop the cron jobs defined in the cron package and, instead, promote the use of the of the cron-standard package (as highlighted in #333837). I have that package ready (but it has not been uploaded to the archive yet). Cron will probably Recommend: it and all the periodic tasks not defined in other packages (such as the lost+found review) will be done there instead.
