It turned out to be, of cause, quite my own fault.
I'm configuring a new NIS server and had thus copied the password file
over from the old Debian 2.2 NIS server.
Vupti, the 'Debian-exim' user had disappeared.
Following your link after reinserting the missing line in the password
file, solved everything:
saratng:~# apt-get install uw-imapd
