A patch is applied in Ubuntu for quite a while in order to avoid importing system users (UID<1000) into passdb.tdb from the maitnainer scripts.
Any reason to not apply this patch? If there's one, then I'll mark the bug as wontfix and move on.... Otherwise, I'll apply the patch. --
