Unfortunately, it is impossible to reasonably reproduce this issue.

It happened when upgrading from outdated testing to current testing.

As tmux requires testing libraries and there are only stable libraries
and testing libraries there is no way how you could reproduce the issue
with the packages in the archive.

I tried installing Lenny, backporting tmux to it and doing a
dist-upgrade and tmux still worked fine after the upgrade so I guess it
is not an issue with current version.

Note that the earlier version would lock up during upgrade (stop accepting
keyboard input), not crash.

If you never experienced this issue yourself during upgrade and are
running tmux during system upgrades I would say that this was very
specific to a particular system configuration.
