The most recent Debian kernel I have is 2.6.32-5-amd64; I can't get X
to work with that kernel (need the nouveau driver), so it's a
different situation. 2.6.34-1-amd64 is in the archive, but won't
install because linux-base in the archives is too old.

For what it's worth, I can bring the system up to the console with
2.6.32-5-amd64 but the bug does not manifest itself. i don't know
whether the difference is no X or the different kernel version.

After I send this email, I'll bring the system up with 2.6.34 without
X and see what happens.
