One obvious difference is that he is using the Debian packages, and started with 1.0.5 and then went to 1.2.0. The 1.0.5 version is in Debian/Squeeze, and version 1.2.0 is in unstable. Perhaps there are some Debian specific library issues? Let me know if you need help installing Debian. I have no idea what went wrong, but thought it best to state the obvious.
