This is not the behavior of earlier emacs under etch(?). System is running squeeze updated within the past few days. Any use of the scroll bar (configured default is on the left of the window) disturbs the highlighting of selected text in the text window. The highlighting change correctly indicates a change in the actually selected text. The sequence <select text with mouse>, <scroll to different places in document>, <paste text at new location> is effectively impossible.
