I've gone back to debian lenny for now with iproute version 20091226-1 (this used to be in debian testing for a while, I found it in an ubuntu repository and built it using dpkg-buildpackage). This seems to be compatible with the iptables version that ships with debian lenny -- the iproute version shipping with debian lenny does *not* work with the iptables version shipping with lenny. I'm glad to test any version in testing/unstable you throw at me. Maybe we can get to the next stable release where iptables/iproute is fully working together... Thanks for the quick feedback!
