If you compare the output of "apt-cache depends mpd" with "apt-cache rdepends libva1",
you can easily see, that if the problem is in another package from debian-multimedia.org, the cluprit seems to be the libavcodec52 (and "ldd /usr/lib/libavcodec.so.52" confirms that). I have just upgraded libavcodec52: from 5:0.6~svn20100526-0.0 (squeeze) to 5:0.6~svn20100603-0.0 (sid) and the problem went away and mpd starts OK as before. Hope it helps.
