exim4 init scipt exports LANG=C which seems to be the LANG I get in my X session as my shell startup scripts are careful not to override LANG. Before I was starting my X session with xinit rather than gdm which would explain why I was previously unaffected by this. /etc/rc3.d/S20exim4:LANG=C /etc/rc3.d/S20exim4:export LANG -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0.4 APT prefers stable APT policy: (990, 'stable'), (500, 'testing'), (300, 'unstable'), (295, 'experimental'), (290, 'stable-i386'), (280, 'testing-i386'), (270, 'unstable-i386'), (150, 'experimental-i386'), (70, 'oldstable'), (65, 'oldstable-i386') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.34-1-amd64 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages exim4-base depends on: ii adduser 3.110 add and remove users and groups ii cron 3.0pl1-105 management of regular background p ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.24 Debian configuration management sy pn exim4-config | exim4-config-2 <none> (no description available) ii libc6 2.11.1-3 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii libdb4.6 4.6.21-11 Berkeley v4.6 Database Libraries [ ii lsb-base 3.2-20 Linux Standard Base 3.2 init scrip ii netbase 4.34 Basic TCP/IP networking system Versions of packages exim4-base recommends: ii bsd-mailx [mailx] 8.1.2-0.20071201cvs-3 A simple mail user agent ii mailx 1:20071201-3 Transitional package for mailx ren ii psmisc 22.6-1 Utilities that use the proc filesy Versions of packages exim4-base suggests: ii bsd-mailx [mail-re 8.1.2-0.20071201cvs-3 A simple mail user agent pn exim4-doc-html | e <none> (no description available) pn eximon4 <none> (no description available) ii file 4.26-1 Determines file type using "magic" ii icedove [mail-read 2.0.0.24-0lenny1 free/unbranded thunderbird mail/ne pn libmail-spf-query- <none> (no description available) ii openssl 0.9.8g-15+lenny6 Secure Socket Layer (SSL) binary a -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [email protected] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
