I had the same problem with a remote HP laserjet printer. The proposed solution chmod go+rx /usr/lib/cups/backend worked for me. This bug has a different description than #585153: that one refers to cups-pdf and mentions that a solution for cups-pdf has been found. However, the problem is clearly wider than that.
