Right. This is very odd then. I've just tried to reproduce the problem
by installing 3.8.7 with a fresh database, adding one ticket and a
reminder for it, upgrading to 3.8.8 (first not applying the database
update, and then afterward with it) and at no time have I seen the
error described.

Were any other packages upgraded at the same sort of time that could have
explained the problem (you can see this from /var/log/dpkg.log)? What
release are you running (eg lenny, squeeze, sid)?
