I had looked through the cron jobs for other users, and root, and originally found no other jobs running at those times. However, after reading your reply I rechecked and hidden several lines below the KDE kcron comments in root's crontab was an entry for ntpdate. I've moved that entry up so an idiot like me can see it, and pushed it's execution time ahead 15 minutes. I'm confident that this was the problem. That'll teach me to assume that what's displayed on the screen is all there is to see....scroll down... scroll down.
