It would be nice, but bzip2 provides a few additional utilities:

$ dpkg -L bzip2|grep /bin/
/bin/bzexe
/bin/bzcat
/bin/bzip2
/bin/bunzip2
/bin/bzgrep
/bin/bzip2recover
/bin/bzmore
/bin/bzdiff
/bin/bzcmp
/bin/bzless
/bin/bzegrep
/bin/bzfgrep

part of them are used in scripts, so if alternatives system is used
these utilities must be realized, too. They could be scripts, but they
must be present :)

bzcat, bunzip2, bzgrep, bzmore, bzdif, bzless, bzegrep, bzfgrep could
be realized easily, but I don't know how bzexe can be realized.
