In ubuntu we applied this patch:50fix_python26.patch to fix detection of python directories in the configure-script. And we believe you might be interested in applying it too. Attaching it.
Thank for the patch; but could you please explain exactly what problem you are trying to fix?
If util-vserver had been building Python bindings, it would have been accidental: its build-dependecies don't pull packages required to build them.
