Can you please try this with version 4.4-1 in sid? I was unable to reproduce the problem -- it works fine for me with inetutils-inetd. And if you do see the error with 4.4-1, please turn on "$debug 1" in /etc/approx/approx.conf and send the daemon.log or syslog output. Thanks.
