Ok, I found the culprit, and I believe that it is a kernel issue, but
keep that open for now.
The hang *only* occurs when
/usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/94cpufreq
is executed. It seems that setting the default governor to performance
somehow at this point makes the laptop hang.
I fixed that by adding
TEMPORARY_CPUFREQ_GOVERNOR="foobarbaz_not_available"
to /etc/pm/config.d/00-local which in the code path of the above script
means that no action will be done.
I will later on report a bug to the kernel bugzilla or lkml list.
