I just noticed, that the bug (using Xfce) vanished for me. wicd-gtk again starts and shows me the icon. But I'm sorry to say, that I don't know, what change I did recently caused that :( Looking at my aptitude log, a week ago xfce4-notifyd got upgraded from 0.1.0-4 to 0.1.0-5, and according to the changelog, that closed #588272 which seems to be related to some notification specs.
