OK, that was a bit of an adventure for a noob like me but I now have linux-image-2.6.35-trunk-amd64 installed, ACPI enabled and (early days yet) it is behaving well. Both shutdown and reboot are succeeding through many trials and the only new problem I have noted is something that might results from a 'held' package in update manager, which seems to have been resolved by 'aptitude upgrade'.
Not news to you, I am sure, but just in case this makes it to the bug log and maybe helps someone else follow your advice, here is what I did: I installed linux-kbuild-2.6.35_2.6.35-1`experimental.1_amd64.deb (with dpkg -i linux-kbuild-2.6.35_2.6.35-1~experimental.1_amd64.deb) which I built myself following the directions at http://wiki.debian.org/HowToRebuildAnOfficialDebianKernelPackage#Thestoryoflinux-kbuild-2.6 The only significant deviation from cut-n-paste was setting the version number. When I ran 'dch -i' per the instructions I was put into an editor and the version displayed was 2.6.34 instead of 2.6.35. I changed it to 2.6.35. I can't recommend this as I don't know the significance, but it seems to have worked well enough for me. Otherwise, I did everything exactly as indicated in the linked page. This was required so I could install linux-headers-2.6.35-trunk-amd64, which was required so I could install linux-image-2.6.35-trunk-amd64. Thanks again - your help is much appreciated.
