I don't remember clearly, but my best understanding of my notes is that the issue was that they moved the default location for menu.lst around the time of sarge, and grub was segfaulting if it couldn't find menu.lst. My active menu.lst is in /boot/grub/menu.lst, and it's working for me at the moment. I think previously grub looked for it in /lib/grub/i386-pc. Note that this is sent to the bug report, so the next guy with this problem finds the workaround.
