I only know about those bugs that are in the Debian or upstream BTS. My main concern was that the upstream package was unmaintained. If memory serves me well, also some big-endian issues had to be figured out, but now they are fixed. Probably that comment is a bit too scary, since I do not have current knowledge of security issues. According to popcon a lot of instances are installed and I guess there are some scripts/automatization on various systems which depends on it, so just removing is not that nice...
