By the way, as I've rebooted this laptop several times, I've noted that the message Grub displays changes every time Windows manages to overwrite the Grub area. That is, as the welcome message is:
GRUB loading. Welcome to GRUB! symbol not found: 'x' <=== this varies, usually funny ascii chars Aborted. Press any key to exit. I thought it may matter if you try to find signatures. If you are interested in other examples of the boot sector after rebooting Windows, please let me know. OTOH, this system apparently doesn't have ISUSPM.exe mentioned by Ahmad.
